IPL youngsters earn call-up to India Under-19 squad for England tour

Ayush Mhatre to lead India under-19s in England  The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have revealed the Under-19 team that will jet off to England later this month, where they will play five one-day matches and two four-day Tests between June 24 and July 23.  Leading the India U-19 to the UK is 17-year-old Ayush Mhathre, who had a breakthrough season for the Chennai Super Kings after being drafted into the team as an injury replacement for team captain Ruturaj Gaikwad.  The teenager made an instant impact, smashing 32 runs of just 15 deliveries against the Mumbai Indians on debut and followed up with 30 off 19 against the Sunrisers Hyderabad in his second match for the five-time champions.  However, Mhatre catapulted into the spotlight in his third game for the Men in Yellow, where he blasted 94 runs off just 48 balls to become the third-youngest player to record a half century in the history of the IPL. Unfortunately for the youngster, CSK lost the match, but the result confirmed our IPL prediction.  In seven games at the IPL, Mhatre scored 240 runs at an average of 34.28 and a strike rate of 188.97, while in List A cricket, he possesses a batting average of 65.42 and has two first-class centuries to his name.  The 17-year-old’s performances for the Super Kings have led to him being awarded captaincy for the India U-19s tour of England, while wicketkeeper batsman Abhigyan Kundu from Mumbai will serve as the team’s vice-captain.  Rajasthan’s 14-year-old prodigy set for national team debut The 2025 IPL was not only a breakthrough tournament for Mhathre, but it also served as the platform for 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi to burst onto the scene for the Rajasthan Royals, marking a major positive for the team in an otherwise forgettable season.  The baby-faced batsman made headlines across the globe back in April when he led the Royals to a commanding eight-wicket victory over the powerful Gujarat Titans by smashing a scintillating 101 runs off just 38 deliveries, including seven fours and a whopping 11 sixes.  Suryavanshi’s knock saw him write his name in the history books, as he became the youngest player to score a ton in a men’s T20 match, while it also went down as the fastest century by an Indian player (35 balls) – staggering achievements when considering the batting riches India possesses.  By the end of the competition, the youngster had scored 252 runs in seven innings, averaging 36.00 and striking at 206.55. He has since earned comparisons to legendary batter Sachin Tendulkar and will be looking to make his mark on the international scene later this month as part of the India U-19 top order in England.  Check out our cricket predictions

Why Delhi Capitals collapsed after a stunning start to the competition

Batting inconsistencies come back to haunt DC The Delhi Capitals kicked off their 2025 Indian Premier League campaign in the best way possible, surging to the top of the standings in the first few weeks by rattling off four consecutive victories, which confirmed several of our IPL predictions.  After a testing opening encounter against LSG, which they won by one wicket, DC made light work of SRH and CSK, beating them by seven wickets and 25 runs, respectively, before overcoming eventual tournament winners RCB by six wickets in their fourth match.  However, a 12-run defeat to the Mumbai Indians on April 13 proved to be the catalyst for a shift in their momentum. Following that loss to Mumbai, Delhi only managed to win three of their final nine games in the competition, which saw them miss out on a Playoff spot by one point.  Chief among the Capital’s downturn in form was inconsistent batting performances, with Faf du Plessis fading after a strong start, while the likes of Karun Nair and Ashutosh Sharma failed to build on impressive knocks from earlier in the competition.  Constant reshuffling of their top order also threw the team off balance in the mid-season, and the lack of a guaranteed opening duo proved costly, as they were unable to make solid starts to matches – their lack of big-hitters at the death didn’t help matters much either.  Check out our cricket predictions Bowling attack rebuild needed for next season  While the Delhi Capitals may point to their batting inconsistencies as the key aspect behind their collapse, the team’s bowling unit certainly did not do much to help the situation, even when defending big totals.  DC’s head coach Hemang Badani did not shy away from the criticism of his team’s performance after their elimination from the competition. In an interview with the media, he said:  « To some extent, we’ve also had games where we genuinely felt that we could have won, and we just didn’t finish those games. If you want to win this competition, if you want to go to the playoffs, you want to ideally finish off games. And if you don’t, then you have no one else to blame but yourself. » Mitchell Starc began the competition very well, but faded in mid-season, and after opting not to return following the league’s stoppage, DC’s pace attack looked to be lacking the zip that the Aussie left-armer provides, particularly in the death overs.  Kuldeep Yadav did his best to lead the attack with the ball, but he lacked support from those around him, with Mukesh Kumar, T Natarajan and Dushmantha Chameera all failing to make an impact on a consistent basis.  By the end of the tournament, the Capitals’ highest wicket-taker was Yadav with 15 scalps, but that was only good for 17th place in the Purple Cap standings, 10 fewer than the eventual winner of the award, Prasidh Krishna of the Gujarat Titans.  Above everything, the 2025 IPL reminded everyone that a strong start ...

India set for Thailand clash before crucial Asian Cup qualifier against Hong Kong

India face stern test ahead of AFC Asian Cup qualifier Before heading to Hong Kong for their crucial AFC Asian Cup qualifier, the India national football team has stopped off in Pathum Thani to take on Thailand as part of their final preparations, and you can follow all the action in real-time with our Thailand vs India livescore tool.  These two nations are no strangers to each other, with their rivalry stretching as far back as the 1962 Asian Games in Jakarta, which India won 4-1. Since then, though, Thailand have emerged as the more successful team, having won 12 of the 26 matches between the sides, while India has won seven and seven ended level.  Since the appointment of Japanese tactician Masatada Ishii in December 2023, the War Elephants have risen an incredible 14 places in the FIFA World Rankings. Ishii led the team to the round of 16 at the previous Asian Cup just one month into his tenure.  Thailand will also be using this match to fine-tune their squad, as they too are leading up to an important Asian Cup clash against Turkmenistan, where they will be looking to build on their impressive victory over Sri Lanka back in March.  India, meanwhile, has left nothing to chance and began their training camp for this month’s matches in Kolkata on May 19. The Blue Tigers also played two warm-up matches against locally based opposition and won both, which would have given them some much-needed confidence coming into this tie.  India’s sights set on Asian Cup triumph over Hong Kong Following their match against Thailand in midweek, India will jet off to the newly built Kai Tak Sports Park Main Stadium, where they will take on Hong Kong in an AFC Asian Cup qualifier on June 10, and our football predictions for the match will be available in the coming days. The Blue Tigers are part of Group C in this competition, which also features Bangladesh, Hong Kong and Singapore. India drew their first match of the group 0-0 against Bangladesh, while Hong Kong also played to a goalless draw in their opener against Singapore.  Notably, only the group winner will secure automatic qualification to the Asian Cup main tournament, which will be hosted in Saudi Arabia. India enter this match ranked 121st according to FIFA world rankings, while the Dragons are placed 154th.  Speaking after arriving in Thailand, India head coach Manolo Marquez said:  “We are preparing for the game against Hong Kong, and Thailand are preparing for Turkmenistan. It’s a good friendly game for both teams because we are in a similar situation (playing the Asian Cup Qualifiers).” Team India will face off against Singapore home and away in the space of five days in October before travelling to Bangladesh in November for their penultimate qualifier. The Blue Tigers’ final match will be at home to Hong Kong on March 31, 2026.  More football news

Virat Kohli in tears as RCB bring an end to 18-year wait for IPL title with victory over PBKS

IPL dream comes true for Royal Challengers Bengaluru An 18-year dream has been fulfilled for fans of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who finally watched their team secure the biggest prize in T20 franchise cricket, winning the Indian Premier League for the first time in their history.  In front of almost 100,000 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the Punjab Kings won the toss and elected to bowl, and made a dream start, knocking over the dangerous Phil Salt in the second over for just 16 runs.  However, Virat Kohli, who has lived through the highs and lows with the Royal Challengers for 18 years, was once again the man for the big occasion, anchoring the team at the top of the order with what turned out to be a match-winning knock of 43 from 35 deliveries, which confirmed two of our IPL predictions for the match. RCB’s middle order all got starts but failed to kick on, with Mayank Agarwal, skipper Rajat Patidar, Liam Livingstone and Jitesh Sharma all scoring in the mid-20s, while Romario Shepard produced a crucial cameo at the death, with 17 runs off nine balls.  After posting a defendable total of 190/9 in their 20 overs, the men from Bengaluru looked to be in trouble when the Punjab Kings shot out of the blocks to 72/1 in the eighth over, but the introduction of Krunal Pandya proved to be a defining moment, with the spinner knocking over Prabhsimran Singh and Josh Inglis in quick succession.  Shashank Singh delivered one of the most memorable innings of the season, smashing 61 runs off just 30 deliveries at a stunning strike rate of 203.33, but Pandya, Yash Dayal and Bhuveneshwar Kumar proved too good at the death and held their opponents to 184/7, six runs fewer than they needed to win the title.  Check out our cricket predictions Emotional Kohli reacts to RCB’s long-awaited IPL triumph When the final ball was bowled and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru were confirmed as champions for the first time in 18 years, Kohli was overcome with emotion and dropped to his knees to soak in the moment.  Despite all his success with the Indian national team, the IPL trophy is about the only award that has eluded the superstar batsman, and one that any neutral or Indian cricket fan would have wanted the great man to lift at least once in his career.  In a truly touching moment, King Kohli took a moment to not only thank his current teammates but also shout out some of his former ones, particularly South African legend AB de Villiers, who was in attendance at the Narendra Modi Stadium alongside another RCB great, Chris Gayle. Kohli said:  “What he (AB) has done for the franchise is absolutely tremendous. I told him before the game, this one is as much yours as it is ours, and I want you to celebrate with us when we lift that trophy by the end of the night. »  Asked about how ...

Could Felix Agu be next Super Eagles star after trading Germany for Nigeria?

Agu makes debut for Super Eagles at Unity Cup Felix Agu is the newest player to don the famous green and white jersey of the Nigerian national football team, having been handed his debut at the Unity Cup last weekend by Eric Chelle against the Raggae Boys of Jamaica at the home of Brentford FC.  Having failed to break into Die Mannschaft senior team and now at the age of 26, Agu applied for clearance to switch allegiance from Germany to Nigeria and, once granted approval by FIFA, was invited by coach Chelle and the NFF to join the Super Eagles at the Unity Cup last week, which was covered live on our football livescore tool.  The German-born defender represented Germany at the Under-21 level but opted to represent the Super Eagles to « fulfil his desire of connecting with his roots,” as both of his parents were born in Nigeria. He said in an interview following the approval from FIFA:  “It’s nice to represent the biggest African country. To connect more to my roots and to be able to play with such good players. It’s an honour to just represent such a big, big country. I see the quality of players we have here in this team, and what we can achieve, so it was my plan to be able to contribute and represent my country.” The Werder Bremen defender was an unused substitute in the Super Eagles’ 2-1 victory against Ghana in their first match at the Gtech, but was handed a starting role in their second versus Jamaica, which they won on penalties after the game ended level at 2-2. In his post-debut press conference, Agu said: “It was a good week overall. I was given a warm welcome by the team, and I’m looking forward to more chances in the future.” Nigeria’s next major challenge will come in September, when they face back-to-back World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa. The Super Eagles are in a must-win situation heading into those games, so be sure to keep an eye out for our World Cup 2026 predictions for more insights ahead of kickoff.  Agu expected to remain in Bundesliga despite Premier League interest Agu just completed one of the best seasons of his professional career with Werder Bremen, scoring three goals in 22 Bundesliga matches, while he also recorded the fastest speed in the German top flight of 36.31 km/h.  As a result, the 26-year-old has garnered interest from several clubs across Europe heading into the summer transfer window, and reports in recent weeks suggest that Premier League outfits West Ham United and Fulham are among those keeping tabs on the Nigerian full-back.  However, Peter Niemeyer, head of professional football for Werder Bremen, has poured cold water on such speculation, affirming that there has been no contact made by any Premier League clubs, while emphasising that Agu is firmly a part of Die Werderaner’s plans for next season.  Werder Bremen had a solid season in the Bundesliga, ...

Records that could be broken in IPL Final between RCB and PBKS

Player props: Highest individual player score and bowling figures in an IPL final While lifting the IPL trophy is undoubtedly a team effort, players will also be looking to etch their names in the history books of the competition by registering the best batting or bowling figures ever seen in a final.  The current highest individual total by a batsman in an IPL final is 117* by Australian opener Shane Watson for the Chennai Super Kings in 2018, followed by former India batter Wriddhiman Saha’s 115* for the Punjab Kings against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2014.  Notably, those knocks are the only centuries that were ever scored in an IPL final, but given the form of Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer this season, those records could be under threat. Our Royal Challengers Bengaluru vs Punjab Kings prediction suggests that both batsmen are expected to produce big performances, so be sure to check it out ahead of the toss.  On the bowling front, Indian spin legend Anil Kumble currently holds the record for the best figures with the ball in a final. He took a stunning 4/16 for RCB against the Deccan Chargers back in 2009, and is one of only three bowlers to notch up a four-fer in an IPL final.  Notably, the 2025 Indian Premier League final could be a memorable one for Mayank Agarwal and Krunal Pandya. Agarwal needs just one six to complete 100 IPL maximus and is only 12 runs shy of recording 5,000 T20 runs, while Pandya is 50 runs away from completing 3,000 T20 runs.   Highest team total and successful run chase  On to team records, and the highest score in an IPL final is held by the Gujarat Titans, who scored 214-4 versus the Chennai Super Kings in 2023. Unfortunately for GT, their total was reduced to 170 via DLS, which CSK chased down to secure their fifth title.  The record for the highest successful run chase on record in the IPL is 200, and currently belongs to the outgoing champions, Kolkata Knight Riders, against the Punjab Kings in their only IPL final appearance ever in 2014.  This year, the Royal Challengers have surpassed the 200-run mark four times, which confirmed several of our IPL predictions, while the Kings have done so on a whopping eight occasions, including in Qualifier 2, where they chased down 203 against the Mumbai Indians with six balls to spare.  First captain to win an IPL final for two separate teams The final record at stake in the 2025 Indian Premier League final is confined solely to Punjab Kings’ skipper Shreyas Iyer, who can become the first player to win the competition while captaining two separate teams. Iyer led KKR to their third IPL title last season.  MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma are the joint-most successful captains in the history of the IPL, having lifted the trophy five times apiece as captains of CSK and MI, respectively, while Gautam Gambhir has earned two titles as the leader of KKR. The ...
